Wareham High School students gear up for spring musical

May 1, 2015

Neither snow, nor rain, nor a whole lot of snow can stop the students of Wareham High School’s Viking Theater Company from performing “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in a couple weeks.

The students, joined by a few others without singing or speaking parts, practiced for the musical in the Wareham High School auditorium Thursday evening. It was their 10th practice -- about one-third the number it should have been, assistant director and Wareham senior Sydney Abele, 18, said.

Abele said most of the hang-ups were due to unexpected snow days within the past few months. Despite the reduced practice time, Abele said the actors and actresses have managed to pull together a fairly solid production.

“They’re memorizing their music really well,” Abele said. “The choreographer’s only been here once or twice, but they pick up on moves better than I can. So, I am really proud of them for that.”

Wareham senior Kim Barboza, 18, who plays Rona Lisa Peretti, a realtor who has hosted the annual spelling bee for the last nine years, echoed Abele’s sentiments regarding the foreshortened practice time.

“We’re not as rehearsed as we’d like to be, but the cast is incredibly passionate, and incredibly talented, so I am really not that worried,” Barboza said.

Barboza said her favorite part of the production is the humor of the piece.

“There’s a lot of ad-libbing. My character provides a lot of colored commentary,” Barboza said. “We have teachers that are going to be our volunteer elementary school spellers.”

The performance, which is partly ad-libbed in accordance with the script, focuses on a fictional, small-town spelling bee, in which six main characters compete.

The school will put on “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on May 14 at 7 p.m., and May 16 at 3 p.m. For tickets, or more information, contact Carolyn Gomes Viera at cgomesviera@wareham.k12.ma.us.
