Wareham High students cash in on good test scores
They say that hard work pays off, and for some Wareham High School students, the phrase couldn’t hold any truer.
Several senior Advanced Placement (AP) students at the school were rewarded with checks Tuesday morning for at least $50 apiece as a reward for passing their AP exams last year as juniors in English, math and science, as were some former students from last year’s senior class.
Students who passed one of the exams were given $50, and students who passed both were given $100, with the money coming through the Massachusetts Insight Education’s “Mass Math and Science Initiative (MMSI),” which provides schools and students with funding with the goal of progressing AP programs in the states high schools.
“We’re very excited to present these checks to you for all your hard work and effort,” said Principal Scott Palladino, who along with Assistant Principal Deb Freitas presented the checks and certificates to the current seniors.
Palladino said that this is the second of a three year partnership with MMSI, noting that the AP program will have been provided with over $250,000 by the program’s end next year. He said the funds go towards things like Saturday learning workshops for the students, professional development for AP teachers, and covering exam fees for students, and that almost $2,000 was awarded to the students themselves for passing the exams.
“Sometimes we have to jump through hoops (to adhere to MMSI’s standards), but the hoops are worth jumping through,” said Palladino. “The (professional development) is world class. It’s been a good thing. And the teaching is up to where it needs to be.”
Palladino said that although the sessions are voluntary, every one of the AP teachers at the school have been involved with the professional development.
Freitas said that students needed to achieve at least a score of 3 out of 5 in order to pass the AP exams, adding that MMSI does not cover the history, art, or economics portion of the AP program at the school.
“(MMSI) is great for students and it’s great for the school,” she said, adding that by participating in the college level courses, they’re also getting a saving money they’d be spending on college courses. “Hopefully they can use it to pay for half of one of their books when the get to school — books are expensive.”
The students awarded were: Allison Bernique, Andrew Tricker, Ashley Texiera, Brianna Muir, Cameron Bancroft, Cecilia Briggi, Emma Wynne, Hope Wallace, Jamie McCann, Jamie Shapiro, Jeffrey Cifello, John Irving, Joshua Dix, Katelin Murphy, Kaylyn Lockyer, Kimberly Barboza, Maddison Stahmer ($100), Kylie Gillette, Mary Torraco, Meghan Silvia ($100), Michael McInerney, Michaela Horman, Nathanial King, Nicole Nault ($100), Nicole Russo, Owen Braley ($100), Quinn Staley ($100), and Sidney Andrade.
