Wareham High students wash cars for a cause
Every Saturday morning weather-permitting, a different group of students from Wareham High School descend on the Wareham Fire Department on Main Street to raise money for their school.
This past Saturday, a group of representatives from the school’s Student Council were out washing cars as part of a weekly occurrence that sees one of several different groups at the school go out into the community to raise money.
"They are providing a service to their community by giving back," said Wareham High Principal Scott Palladino. "Additionally, they work to fund extra-curricular opportunities that go above and beyond our budgetary limitations."
“The Fire Department makes it available,” said Nancy Yancey, an advisor for the Student Council.
"We do pride ourselves on what we can do to give back," said Wareham Fire Chief McDuffy, on why they allow people to use the facility. "It's good to see kids get out and earn some money and do good for the community."
At the car washes, there is no set fee, but donations are encouraged, which Yancey said will run “through car wash weather.”
Yancey said that the Student Council has several functions. Those include representing students at School Committee meetings, at the regional level, and at the state level, as well as to oversee Spirit Week at the school and to organize pep rallies and the annual Homecoming Dance.
"The Student Council helps me to coordinate educational activities for the student body," said Palladino. "As an organization, they conduct dozens of fundraisers to help support their program and many non-profit organizations both locally and nationally."
“It started off slow, but we’ve had some really busy times,” said sophomore Adrianna Adams, who is a member of the Student Council and who washed cars this past weekend.
“We’ve had a lot of randoms, too, which is really cool,” added Sara Tyma, a sophomore.
Yancey said that a variety of different groups from the school are able to raise funds at the car washes for their particular needs, from athletics such as the football team and boys track to after-school groups such as the garden club.
“We have regular people that come through the car wash,” said Yancey, noting one particular customer named Leroy who comes through to get his car washed almost every week. “He’s a character.”
Yancey said the funds raised at this particular event would go towards paying the cost of busses to bring students to meetings for the Southeastern Massachusetts Association of Student Council, which the group attends each year.
