Wareham kids take aim during free throw competition

More than a dozen young sharpshooters showed off their basketball skills at the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship held Sunday afternoon in the Gleason Family YMCA.
Of those boys and girls, eight may move on to the next level of competition later this month after they won their respective age groups. Wareham’s Father Francis Grogan Council 15280 sponsored the local competition.
“This is one way we try to give something back to the community for the kids,” said Deputy Knight Bob Schwarz, who helped coordinate the event.
The participant with the most free throws was 10-year-old Leandro Andrade who sunk 13 out of 15 baskets. There were a total of 15 participants in the competition that was open to kids between the ages of 9 and 14.
While everyone received a certificate of recognition, those who won their age group are eligible to compete in a district event on Jan. 22 at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Taunton. The winners of that contest then move onto the regional competition set for March 4 in Kingston.
Winners of Wareham’s competition for girls are: Alexandria James, 11 and Abigail Gifford, 10.
Winners of Wareham’s competition for boys are: Ryan Jacobson, 14; Lawrence Hendricks, Jr., 13; Xavier Hendricks, 12; Diego Mello, 11; Leandro Andrade, 10; Malikhi Tavares, 9.
