Wareham man found guilty of child rape

A Wareham man was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl and sentenced to 20-22 years in State prison on Thursday, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.

Russell Smith, 41, of Wareham, was found guilty after a four-day trial in Brockton Superior Court on two counts each of aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault and battery of a child under 14, and one count of witness intimidation.

The jury found Smith guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a female between the years of 2009 and 2011.

Brockton Superior Court Judge C.J. Moriarty sentenced Smith to serve 20-22 years in State prison on the two counts of aggravated rape of a child. Smith was additionally sentenced to serve 3-5 years in State prison on two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and one count of witness intimidation. All of these sentences were ordered to be served concurrently.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Wareham Police Department.
