Wareham marinas ranked in top 2 percent nationally

Onset and Wareham were recognized this year, with Boaters’ Choice Awards going to the Point Independence Yacht Club, Onset Harbor and the Onset Bay Marina from Marinas.com.

Boaters’ Choice Awards went to 152 marinas in the country, the top 2 percent highest-rated marinas in the United States. Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster said it was the first time the town-owned Onset Harbor has received the award. He thanked the Onset Bay Association and other groups that organize events in town that attract boaters to the area.

“It’s not really a department award, it’s a community award,” Buckminster said.

Winners are chosen based on Marinas.com user reviews, with a minimum star rating of four on their profile.

“We felt this to be the most thoughtful, organic and transparent way to reward marinas for their year-long efforts, rather than relying on votes submitted during a short period of time at year’s end,” said Katharine Kirk, a spokesperson for Marinas.com.

Many of the boaters who review Onset Harbor are using it for the first time, Buckminster said, so he is glad to see the harbor being recognized for its efforts.

“This revision in Boaters’ Choice marina selection more closely aligns with the mission of Marinas.com to empower every boater an equal voice, to provide boaters worldwide quality marine information and to reward marinas that work to consistently provide excellent service to boaters,” said Dockwa and Marinas.com CEO Mike Melillo in a press release. “Boaters contribute reviews throughout their cruising season, so the associated ratings reflect their experiences without having to jog their memories in an end-of-year contest.”

Onset Harbor is now using a mooring reservation app Dockwa, which gives the harbor more exposure and more bigger boats. Dockwa allows marinas to respond to boater reservations, process payments, manage docks and communicate with customers. There has been an increase in boaters using the harbor since the department started using the app, Buckminster said.

“It’s nice to see that we’re being recognized by boaters that are coming in that haven’t been here before,” Buckminster said.

He said he is glad to see three locations in Wareham recognized in the top in the country. The recipients this year range from private yacht clubs to public services yards. Marinas.com has millions of visitors annually and provides information for more than 17,000 marinas worldwide.
