Wareham Middle School showcases a day in the life of a student

Slimy putty, mathematical problem sets, and three-dimensional art were all on display at the first Wareham Middle School Expo Thursday night.

Almost every classroom was open for parents to visit with their children and learn about the typical day in the life of a Wareham Middle School student.

“Any classroom you go into, there’s an example of that,” Middle School Principal Daniel Minkle said.

Instructional leader Tracie Cote said every aspect of the students’ academic lives was on display that night.

“There’s art presentations, and music presentations,” Cote said. “But there’s also … projects that they’ve worked on in math, and science, and [English], and social studies, and foreign language. Just about every curriculum that we present, there is a project or something that the students are proud they're presenting.”

Toni Thatcher, a sixth-grade science teacher and seventh-grade social studies teacher, said she thought the night was an important one, because it showed many positive aspects of the middle school she thinks go unrecognized by the community.

“We want to showcase our kids,” Thatcher said. “The kids are fantastic, and we really want to … show what we do as teachers. The kids get up and move. It’s not just pen and paper.”

Linda Gomes, who brought her grandchildren to the event, said she was pleasantly surprised at the range of work on display. She said her grandchildren had a lot of fun, too.

“We stayed in there a long time!” Gomes said. “I couldn’t even get them to come outside.”
