Wareham, Onset and Carver firefighters knock down fire in Swifts Beach
Twenty firefighters from Wareham, Onset and Carver were on scene at a house fire on Broadmarsh Avenue in Swifts Beach early Thursday afternoon.
Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy said the department received a call from a neighbor who saw smoke billowing from the windows of 9 Broadmarsh Ave. McDuffy said the call for a working fire was ordered at 11:25 when Wareham Fire arrived on the scene.
McDuffy said there was smoke showing and "fire throughout the house" when they arrived at the single story home. No one was in the house at the time of the fire and no one was injured fighting the fire. By 12:15 p.m. firefighters were checking for hot-spots as the fire had already been put out. Firefighters left the scene at 4:32 p.m.
McDuffy said Onset Fire was the second department on scene and Carver Fire was also on scene. He said Wareham EMS helped find the fire hydrant on the street. McDuffy said his department had previously cleared it out but a snow plow could have pushed snow up against it because it had to be dug out again.
He said there was fire, heat and smoke damage to the house but it was too early to tell how extensive any of the damage was.
In addition to the three fire departments on scene, Wareham EMS, Wareham Police, the town building inspector and a worker from Eversource (formerly NStar) were also present.
The Wareham Fire Department is still investigating the incident.
