Wareham Police arrested two men on weapons charges on Tuesday, August 20, after a brief chase in which one of the suspects was apprehended by an officer and his K-9 partner.

Police responded to 7 Cannonberry Way in Swifts Beach at approximately 6:15 p.m., due to reports of a suspicious man leaving the home with an item wrapped in a white T-shirt, police said.

Officer Paul Somers noticed the suspect's car at the intersection of Swifts Beach Road and Marion Road and stopped it, according to police.

During the stop, the driver of the car, 23-year-old Carlton Borges of 10 Parker Drive in Wareham, was found to be in possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, police said. Borges allegedly fled the scene when Somers discovered a loaded .44 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, wrapped in a white T-shirt, under the front seat of the vehicle, police said.

Officer Michael Phinney arrived at the scene with his K-9 partner, Rolf, and pursued Borges, who was apprehended and charged with carrying a firearm without a permit, disorderly person, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and resisting arrest, according to police.

The passenger of the vehicle, who police identified 24-year-old Michael Vieira of Mashpee, was charged with possession of a firearm, police said.

The men were arraigned at Wareham District Court on Wednesday, August 21.
