Wareham Public Schools officials are seeking a new business manager, a position which will be “daunting for anyone else to fill,” according to Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood.

Current Business Manager Michael MacMillan will leave his post effective June 30. MacMillan joined the district five years ago. In 2016, the School Committee approved a five-year contract extension for MacMillan.

Currently, school officials are grappling with a budget shortfall that will spell massive cuts in staff and may force the closure of Minot Forest Elementary as a cost-saving measure.

Shaver-Hood said the recent town election, which ousted longtime School Committee member Geoff Swett and placed Mike Flaherty and Rebekah Pratt on the board, was a deciding factor for MacMillan’s departure.

“Given the change in the School Committee he thought it was time to leave,” said Shaver-Hood.

She noted that MacMillan's absence will be a “tremendous loss” for the district. MacMillan’s budget expertise, thriftiness and organization has brought the business department “to the next level,” said Shaver-Hood.

The position has been advertised, and Shaver-Hood said she and the School Committee will work together during the hiring process.

“We’ll be hoping for input from both parties because it’s such a vital position for the district,” said Shaver-Hood.

She declined to say where MacMillan will work next.
