Wareham Public Schools have received a $250,000 grant from the state to partner with local early education programs.

Preschool Department Chair Wendy Owens explained the school district is still in the planning phase of figuring out how to use the grant, but administrators already have some ideas.

According to Owens, the district is looking to partner with private early education institutions such as Best Friend's Learning Center and Little People's College and with the nonprofit South Shore Early Learning Center.

The school district would provide the local preschools with support in areas such as speech, social and behavioral skills as well as providing special education assistance.

Additionally, Owens said, the district would offer professional development opportunities for teachers, and Boston-based early childhood research firm Early Childhood Associates would help the preschools assess how they can strengthen preschool and childcare services in town.

"We are looking to develop a nice partnership between the school and some of the local preschools," said Superintendent of Schools Matt D'Andrea. "We want to get kids some of these services so as they come into kindergarten, they are better prepared for the academics."
