Wareham puts 6 properties on the auction block

Nov 2, 2016

Bidding starts on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. in Town Hall when six properties seized by the town for non-payment of taxes will be auctioned.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan made the announcement at the Selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday night.

Money raised from the auction translates into a quick influx of cash for Wareham. Also, the properties will be returned to the tax rolls where they will hopefully become an ongoing source of revenue.

Sullivan said when the town acquires property through non-payment of taxes officials seek to unload it as soon as possible.

“We never truly want to own property,” said Sullivan. “That’s not the business we’re in.”

The six properties up for auction are 25 Cromesett Road, 14 Plymouth Avenue, 21 Parker Drive, 6 Leonard St., 31 Plymouth Avenue and 18-20 Allen Avenue.

He credited the auctioneer company, Shrewsbury-based Zekos Group Auctioneers, for doing an excellent job at previous town auctions. At a 2014 auction, the town earned approximately $350,000 from the sale of property.
