Wareham School Committee approves 3-year teacher contract

May 25, 2017

The Wareham Education Association and School Committee have come to terms on a new, three-year deal that promises 3 percent raises for educators each year of the contract.

On Wednesday night, School Committee members unanimously approved the agreement, which includes a few changes to sick days and the number of days teachers must work.

Committee members praised association members for the even-handed negotiations.

“It’s a – legally – naturally adversarial process,” said committee member Geoff Swett. “But I believe both parties acted in good faith.”

Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood said the new contract, which is in effect from Sept. 1, 2017 to Aug. 31, 2020, allows teachers to roll unused personal days into sick days. It also adds one additional work day for teachers that will be used for a professional development workshop.

Currently, teachers must attend three professional development workshops a year. The new contract bumps that number to four.

Regarding pay raises, Shaver-Hood said teachers will receive a 3 percent raise for the first, second and third years of the contract.

Shaver-Hood noted that she appreciated the hard work put in by both sides on the contract.
