In the wake of a Wareham School Committee resignation, officials are seeking applicants to fill that vacancy on the five-member board as soon as possible.

The move was prompted by the December resignation of School Committee member Rebekah Pratt. Elected in 2018 for a three-year term, Pratt resigned citing her family’s move to Carver.

“This has been a very difficult decision to make,” Pratt said in a statement. She said her daughter will continue to attend Wareham High School following the move. Pratt, who is involved in youth athletics, will also continue to volunteer.

On Tuesday, School Committee Chair Joyce Bacchiocchi appeared before Selectmen. She sought guidance on how to start the process to fill the position.

“With only four members left, if one member is missing, it’s difficult to work,” said Bacchiocchi.

Per the town’s charter, which is Wareham’s governing document, Selectmen must advertise and seek applicants who will then be interviewed. Board members agreed to publish on Jan. 9 a notice seeking applicants. School Committee members and Selectmen are scheduled to interview potential applicants on Jan. 24 in the town’s Multi-Service Center.
