Wareham school officials share plans for high school EMT course

Wareham High School students may have the opportunity to receive EMT certification through a new class offered next year.

The EMT course is part of a proposal for several new work-based learning programs, where students gain hands-on experience in a field while still in school.

The class is also part of larger changes in the science curriculum at the high school. Through a state grant, Wareham High School has the opportunity to hire a science teacher to work in the new “environmental and life science pathways” program.

Principal Scott Paladino presented the EMT course and the rest of the new programs of study at the Jan. 16 School Committee meeting.

Paladino said the Wareham High School has the staff to provide most of the courses presented at the meeting, including the EMT offering, but whether the courses make it out of the planning stage is dependent on student interest.

Paladino said he and Superintendent Matt D’Andrea met with representatives from Wareham EMS and the Wareham Fire Department during the plan stage for the course.

“They are all very excited that we’re offering this and could potentially have students working for them in the future,” Paladino said. “I’m hoping it takes off.” .
