Wareham Selectmen approve 1-day liquor license for oyster festival
The increasingly popular Wareham Oyster Festival, now in its fifth year, will be held May 27 in Pezzoli Square on Main Street.
“It’s been growing by leaps and bounds,” said Linda Burke, one of the festival’s organizers. “It’s attracting people from all over the South Coast and Cape Cod.”
The event features fresh oysters, food from area restaurants and a variety of vendors.
Burke spoke to Selectmen on Tuesday and sought a one-day beer and wine license for the festival. Selectmen approved the request. This year, visitors may also stroll up and down Main Street with their beverages.
“The intent is to allow folks to purchase beer or wine with their oysters and walk along the street where vendors will be located,” said Burke.
Wareham Police require that alcohol sales stop at 4 p.m., one hour before the festival ends for the day.
Selectman Alan Slavin praised Burke and other festival organizers for the event, which has not required town funds.
“This is event is completely self-funded,” said Slavin. “It’s been a great event for the Town of Wareham.”
Burke agreed.
“It’s been entirely supported by the local businesses that see the benefit of it,” said Burke.
