Wareham students to return to school Tuesday after delayed start

Feb 3, 2015

All Wareham Public Schools will start two hours late Tuesday morning due to snow, according to Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver Hood.

Tuesday will be the first day back to school for Wareham students since Monday, January 26.

Two major snowstorms left for difficult travel in Wareham, hence the cancellations and delay.

Several of Wareham's principals agreed that the school days wouldn't disrupt the learning process for students, as they would pick up where they left off, although report card cycles would likely be pushed back.

"Most students used the time to get ahead on current or future assignments," said Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino. "Both the students and teachers will pick up where we left off last Monday."

Principals at both Decas and Minot Forest elementary schools hoped students used the time to keep up on reading and other skills.

"Snow adventures (will) make great writing prompts when we return," said Decas Elementary Principal Donna Noonan.

Shaver-Hood said there are currently five snow days built into the schedule, and schools will be responsible for making up any other days out of beyond those five days

"If we do not use the built in days, they are deducted and we are able to finish our school year earlier," said Shaver-Hood. "By law we must complete 180 student days and the school year must be completed by June 30."

She said the process is not unique to Wareham and is practiced across the state.
