Nov 20, 2016

A 17-year-old from Wareham has been hospitalized after an early morning police pursuit that ended with a car crash.

The teenager, who is not being identified at this time, was found lying in the road near the crashed vehicle in the area of 491 County Road in Marion. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Wareham EMS. Police said he was in serious condition.

Around 4:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, Wareham Police received a call about an erratic driver on Glen Charlie Road who had sideswiped a car. The car reportedly traveled from East Wareham to Wareham Crossing Mall via the highway where, traveling without headlights and at high speed, it was seen by Wareham Sgt. Michael Smith.

Officers spotted the car near Adrian's Package Store, but as it entered Marion police were told to stop following it. According to a statement from the Wareham Police Department, the crash happened seconds later less than a mile from Adrian's.

The teenager, who was driving with a suspended license, apparently skidded off the road and hit several trees. No one else was in the car and there were no other injuries as a result of the accident, police said.

The teen has been charged with operating a vehicle after a license suspension, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, and speeding.
