Wareham tops Bourne in Thanksgiving Day battle

Wareham 40, Bourne 22
Nov 26, 2015

The Vikings' season won't be remembered as a whopping success, but a resounding thumping of the neighboring Bourne Canalmen makes all the frustrations disappear for a day.

On a beautiful, warm and windy day in Bourne, Wareham ground out a decisive 40-22 victory. Wareham rarely passed (only two times), and Bourne rarely ran, but the Vikings' game plan proved the more effective, wearing down the Bourne defenders as the game progressed.

The power behind the running was the trio of seniors Joshua Onujiogu and Nick Elicier and junior Ryan Almeida.

The offensive line opened small cracks between the tackles most of the day. Onujiogu and Elicier pounded the ball straight ahead through the Canalmen defense for chunks of yardage.  When they weren't pounding, Almeida was slashing off-tackle and zig-zagging for more yardage.

After several turnover-filled possessions, Wareham scored first with 3:28 left in the first quarter on a run by Onujiogu.  The two-point conversion failed, but Wareham led 6-0.  Bourne scored on a long touchdown catch by Nick Jourdy from Tyler Rondeau to make the game 8-6 following a successful two-point conversion. Wareham closed out the first half scoring with a touchdown fourth-down run by Ryan Almeida, pushing Wareham's lead to 12-8.

Wareham continued to run the ball in the second half, leading to third quarter touchdown runs by Almeida and Onujiogu, the latter a 45-yard dash up the right sideline.

On the opening play of the 4th quarter, Onujiogu rambled 55 yards to the Bourne 2-yard line, where Almeida ran it to make the score 34 - 16.

Bourne would draw closer after a 55-yard pass play from Rondeau to Nick Jerdee, making the score 34-22, but Wareham closed out the scoring with another running touchdown by Onugjiugu with 3:57 left to play.

Wareham closed the 2015 season with a record of 4-7.  Bourne ended the season with a record of 2-9.
