Wareham's cleanup continues

On Friday, it was Main Street. On Saturday, it was Onset's turn.

With another winter storm reported to be on the way, workers with Wareham's Municipal Maintenance Department shut down Main Street Friday to clear sidewalks and streets after a blizzard left nearly two feet of snow in town.

Saturday morning, Onset Avenue was shut down from Camp Street to Union Avenue while workers cleared the streets and sidewalks.

"This operation requires the snow and ice to be lifted by loaders then transported away by truck and is expected to last through the afternoon," said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan. "There will be police details directing traffic but we ask that you please plan for delays when traveling through Onset Center."

Earlier in the week, Sullivan said that due to the large volume of snow, heavy equipment was necessary as smaller vehicles proved insufficient. He also said that a machine used to clear sidewalks had also broken down during the cleanup process.

Municipal Maintenance workers started at about 10 a.m. brought snow from large piles made in the middle of Onset Avenue to dumptrucks, who then transported the snow to the Hines Field parking lot across from Lopes Playground.

Longtime Onset resident Winna Dean said that's historically where large amounts of snow have been put in past storms.

"The kids used to go sledding down the piles," she said.

In downtown Wareham, large mounds of snow taken from the roadway were piled high in the Pezzoli Square parking lot, with more snow taken out on dump trucks, though it's currently unclear where that snow was taken. Sidewalks that were once barely passable earlier in the week were now almost completely cleared of snow and ice.

"It was a great job," said Mary Labonte, owner of Mumma Mary's restaurant on Main Street. "I think they did the best job they could do with what they had to work with. It was a big storm."
