Wareham's goodwill ambassador returns from Japan bearing gifts
Still amazed by the good time she had abroad and with stories to share, Wareham Historical Society President Angela Dunham returned from her trip to Japan with greetings and gifts from Kushimoto.
"They send you all their best wishes for peace and prosperity," Dunham told Selectmen on Tuesday night.
Dunham was invited to the 225th anniversary celebration of Captain John Kendrick's landfall in Japan. The celebration was held in Kushimoto, where the Wareham captain became the first American official to make contact with Japanese residents.
Dunham brought with her a token of friendship called "challenge coins," which were designed by Board of Selectmen Chair Judith Whiteside. The coins are about the size of a half-dollar and depict the town seal on one side.
"The challenge coins were a tremendous success. I am returning to you a challenge coin made in Kushimoto," said Dunham, holding up the coin she received.
Dunham said a bond was forged among the two towns.
"The trip was a huge success. I was in good company. I was treated like a rockstar, Japan is a beautiful country, and I can't thank each and every one of you enough for your support," said Dunham.
Dunham left for Japan as a goodwill ambassador on Oct. 29 and returned Nov. 5.
