Wareham's Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 21

Jan 14, 2013

The Boys & Girls Club will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration on Monday, Jan. 21, at 9 a.m.

The keynote speaker of the event is Darcy Fernandes, who serves as principal of Roosevelt Middle School in New Bedford and was a longtime teacher in Wareham Public Schools. While teaching in Wareham, Fernandes received the Mass. Community Service Learning Teacher of the Year award, and was a semi-finalist for Mass. Teacher of the Year.

The celebration's theme is "I have a dream… I can achieve it." Wareham students who demonstrate the qualities that King stood for — character, leadership, determination, and equality — will be honored at the breakfast.

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $7 for students. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

Sponsors are being sought to defray the cost of providing free tickets for the honorees. To sponsor, contact Barbara Sullivan at 508-295-5400. For tickets, contact Sullivan or Wendy Crowley at wcrowley@bgcnewbedford.org.
