Wareham's Mary Savignano celebrates 102nd birthday

Serious golfers are lucky to sink at least one ace in their life. At 102 years old, Wareham’s Mary Savignano has five holes-in-one to her credit, nearly sinking a sixth a few years ago.

“I missed it by about five inches,” she said of the shot that occurred at the Little Harbor Golf Course.

An avid sportswoman, world traveler and gardening aficionado, Savignano (known to many as Aunt Mary) celebrated her 102nd birthday on June 1 surrounded by friends and family.

The event was mostly organized by Savignano’s great niece, Patricia Antonelli of Newport, Rhode Island. Relatives from Florida and all across Massachusetts attended the party that featured an open house from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Neighbors and friends streamed into her home during that time, sharing memories and visiting with the guest of honor.

Up until recently, Savignano lived independently in the home she moved into 44 years ago. She was born and raised in Dedham and lived in West Roxbury, Westfield and Needham before settling in Wareham.

Antonelli said a medical issue waylaid her great aunt, who now receives 24-hour care.

One caregiver, Cindy Kerr, said Savignano’s mind is sharp as ever.

“She is phenomenal,” said Kerr. “Her past is right here in the present. She remembers everything and tells the best stories from her life.

Antonelli credited Savignano’s longevity to a lifetime of activity.

“She lived an active lifestyle long before it was stylish to do so,” said Antonelli.

Tennis, skiing, bowling and especially golf were her favorites.

She picked up golf when her husband Leonard was president of Westfield State College from 1961 to 1972. The couple married on Jan. 19, 1947 and remained together until Leonard passed away 22 years ago.

After leaving Westfield State, Leonard went on to become a commonwealth professor of international education.

That position brought the couple around the world.

On Wednesday, Mary recalled visiting Spain five times, Italy seven times in addition to Saudi Arabia, Romania, Greece, Brazil and many others.

“My favorite place to visit ever was Portugal,” she said. “Does that make me a bad Italian for saying that?”

Locally, Mary has been involved in the Wareham Historical Society, the Tobey Hospital Women’s Guild, the Wareham Garden Club and golfed regularly at the Little Harbor Country Club.

The club’s golf pro, Shawn Lapworth, stopped by to visit with Mary, who he first met as a 13-year-old.

Lapworth asked Mary for her secret to a long life. She thought for a moment and gave the following advice.

“Don’t overeat, get plenty of exercise and treat people well,” she said.
