THIS WEEKEND: 10th annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration

Oct 11, 2013

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to stop by the A.D. Makepeace Company cranberry bogs on October 12 and 13 for the 10th annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration.

The festival, which features old-fashioned activities and whose admission fee includes bogside demonstrations and cranberry-related activities, was designated as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2013 by a tourism industry selection committee. Inclusion in the Top 100 list indicates that the Celebration offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world, according to the survey’s sponsor, the American Bus Association.

“The cranberry industry is so important to the history, culture, and landscape of our region, and this event is truly focused on our agricultural heritage,” said Michael P. Hogan, president and CEO of the A.D. Makepeace Company. “International travelers get to see the beauty of an event that happens in our back yards, and those of us lucky enough to live here always learn something new about the industry.”

Visitors to the Harvest Celebration, which is co-sponsored by the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association and Ocean Spray, can check out demonstrations of the wet cranberry harvest, cooking demonstrations, an tent full of juried crafters, paddleboat rides on scenic Tihonet Pond, food vendors, music, and more.

The event is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission is $10, $5 for seniors, and free for children younger than age 7. Parking is free, and many children’s activities are also free or available for a donation to the nonprofit organizations that run some of them.

Parking on Saturday:

The A.D. Makepeace Company has planned alternate parking from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, during Onset Fire Chief Howard Andersen's funeral.

Andersen passed away last weekend, less than a month after his retirement celebration. He had battled cancer in recent years. For more information, click here.

Traffic in the area of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on Cranberry Highway and, subsequently, around Centre Cemetery on Tihonet Road, is expected to be heavy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Cranberry Harvest Festival visitors will be directed to park at 100 Rosebrook Way during those hours and will be shuttled to the main gate by bus.

If you'd rather park in the main parking area on Tihonet Road, it can be accessed via Route 58 (exit 2 off I-495 in Carver). From the Wareham area, take a right at the end of the ramp onto Route 58 North for 2.6 miles; stay straight on Tremont Street where Route 58 bears to the left; turn right onto Cranberry Road after 0.8 miles, then turn right onto Federal Road, which becomes Tihonet Road in Wareham.

The route will be marked and takes approximately 15 minutes from the highway. Tihonet Road will be open for regular access until about 11 a.m. and after 1 p.m. on Saturday, and all day Sunday.
