Wilforks, community help Tigers get to Florida
The Wareham Tigers went to Florida after reaching their fund-raising goal on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Help came from many sources, from Narrow’s Crossing to New England Patriot Vince Wilfork’s family.
The Pop Warner football team clinched the New England championship on Saturday, Nov. 31, and immediately moved into fund-raising mode to secure the $50,000 needed to travel to Florida for the National Championships.
There was an online fundraising campaign on gofundme.com. The site helped the Tigers raise over $10,000.
Included in these donations was the gift of the Wilforks.
The Wilfork donation is in the name of Bianca Wilfork, Vince’s wife.
The $1,000 donation was made with the message, ‘Good job guys Love the Wilforks.’
The boys, their parents and coaches worked hard, also making phone calls to businesses, asking for money all over town and using social media to rally resources.
They managed to do what seemed impossible, raising $50,000 in about four days.
Perry says he’s grateful to everyone, from individuals to large businesses, that came through to support the team.
“I’m very very proud of this town. . . The town refused to let what happened to the 1990 team happen to this team,” he said.
