Feb 15, 2012

William W. Briggs, Jr., 90, of Onset, formerly of Ayer, a veteran of World War II and former P.O.W., the Korean War and the Vietnam War found peace on February 10.

He was born on March 26, 1921 in Ayer the son of the late William W. Briggs, Sr. and Helen T. (Kinney) Briggs.

Bill was the devoted husband of the late Helen (Jurga) Briggs for 61 years and the loving father of Patricia Cleary and her husband Joseph of Buzzards Bay and Susan Burrell and her husband Robert of Pocasset and the late Wilma Texeira who predeceased him. He always enjoyed his visits from his grandchildren, Jessie Eldredge, Matthew, Daniel, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine and Bernadette Cleary and his 8 great-grandchildren.

After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Bill and Helen rejoined their families in Ayer and Shirley. In 1983, they retired again to Onset where they enjoyed village activities and time on the Bluffs watching boats and people come and go.  Bill especially loved sitting on his porch chatting with all who came by and feeding peanuts to the squirrels and blue jays.  His friendly greetings and banter will be missed by all.

He was a member of the George J. Morin American Legion Post 183 in Shirley.

His funeral was held February 14. A burial service with military honors was held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
