Y donates equipment to schools, gets a few new pieces
Wareham High School has received quite a bit of youth strength equipment, thanks to a donation from the Gleason Family YMCA.
YMCA Director Debbie Fringuelli said the Y is doing some remodeling, and trying to upgrade its current equipment offerings. She said she decided to donate the equipment, rather than trade it in for some money. Though the equipment is 10 years old, Fringuelli is hopeful the school can make good use of it.
“I would like to see it used, because it is in perfectly fine, working condition,” Fringuelli said. “I thought, ‘Let’s give it to our school system, and give the kids the opportunity to learn about strength training.’”
She said the school got 12 pieces that included a leg press, machines for upper body work, “the whole nine yards.”
Replacing it is a large training setup called the Octagon, which is “less scary than it sounds.”
“We want to let folks know it is for everyone, young or old,” Fringuelli said. “It allows them more flexibility to get off cardio equipment.”
A large portion of that training is for seniors, so they can get more functional movements in the gym that translate to their everyday lives. The movement assist with everything from picking up bags to going grocery shopping.
“That is the biggest challenge we have,” Fringuelli said. “They just see it as being trained on strength equipment.”
Fringuelli estimated the facility spent about $80,000 on all new equipment in the gym, including a new half rack, Olympic lifting platform, and televisions. She also said the gym is looking to put in five new spin bikes.
