Yacht club gives surprise donation to Turning Point

Turning Point’s President Marcine Fernandes picked up the phone on Nov. 27. She had just been informed that Turning Point had $1250 deposited into its bank account.

The news was delivered by Rose Berry, manager of the Eastern Bank on Main Street.

The money was donated by the Point Independence Yacht Club of Onset. The amount was the proceeds of the club’s annual Grand Slam Tournament, a fishing tournament held at the end of June.
“I asked [Berry] if there were any charities we could contribute to, and she mentioned Turning Point,” said tournament chairman Chuck Hurley. “The bank has been great partners… We had given to larger charities in the past, but felt there wasn’t a great deal of feedback. We wanted to do something significant where you could see the results.”

“I spoke with [Hurley] about what Turning Point does, and it seemed like a natural match,” Berry said. “It’s a great group with some great people giving their time and energy.”

Turning Point helps the area’s homeless and finically insecure populations, providing anything from rent support to something as simple as a restroom.

“We don’t care what you made last year,” said Lee MacDonald, Turning Point co-director. “We did have a big CEO come in who lost everything… He sold everything. He had a rental, and he was losing that. We helped him stay in that.”
