YMCA costume drive raises funds for financial assistance members

Though the offerings weren’t as large as they are in typical costume stores, the Gleason Family YMCA’s costume sale was a far cry cheaper.

The Y sold clean, gently-used costumes for $10 each Saturday in its main lobby from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. All proceeds went towards the Y’s financial assistance program, which helps individuals or families join the Y at a lower cost.

Event organizer Cathy Longfield said it is the second year she has organized the program, and originally got the idea from a different Y.

“The idea is just to provide an opportunity for people to recycle costumes, because I know my kids only wear them a couple times around Halloween,” Longfield said.

Longfield said Wareham residents often don’t have a lot of money to spend on costumes from traditional costume stores, especially since the children wearing the costumes will often grow out of them by the time Halloween rolls around again next year.

“You just have a limit,” Longfield said. “As a community, economically, we are challenged. But there are quite a few parents who do spend that money.”

Longfield said that even though Halloween only happens once a year, she accepts costumes throughout the year to sell the following October.

“I put [the costumes] in a bin,” Longfield said. “I would have no problem storing them, because I want to keep doing this year after year.”
