YMCA day camps start mid May

May 4, 2012

YMCA branches throughout the southcoast will be offering day camps with financial assistance for those in need from the middle of May until late August.

The Gleason Family YMCA will be holding Camp Nep-In-Nae in Wareham. The other 4 day camps in the southcoast area are Camp Metacomet in Dartmouth, Camp Massasoit in Mattapoisett, Camp Quequechan in Fall River, and Camp Frederick Douglass in New Bedford.

The YMCA encourages parents to help keep their kids physically active and mentally engaged by signing them up for the Y’s day camp.

“While summer should be a time of exploration, youth are sometimes less involved in activities that stimulate their mind and body,” says Derek Heim, executive director of Camp Metacomet at the Dartmouth YMCA, in a prepared statement.

“When at day camp, kids have the opportunity to get outdoors and learn about nature, take on new responsibilities, gain independence, and develop essential social skills and new relationships. As a result, they become more confident, open to trying new things and grow as individuals and as part of a group.”
