All proceeds from the 5K Road Race will go to the YMCA’s financial aid program which provides memberships, and programs such as camp, swimming and sports to those that cannot afford the YMCA experience on their own.
The race travels through the historic streets and along the waterfront of Onset Village.
Four years ago, the race was certified by the USA Track and Field Association which brings top-rated runners from all over New England who use the YMCA 5K to qualify for other races.
Last year there were more than 300 runners and probably another 100 family, friends and spectators that cheered the runners on.
More than 40 volunteers, some YMCA members and staff and others Bike Path Committee members, come together to help make the race a reality. Wareham Police also provides officers along the route.
The race also receives sponsorship from many local businesses including Southcoast Hospital Group, the Law Office of Scott Brilliant, Wareham Pediatrics, Bayside Runner, The Greater Boston Running Company and Eastern Bank.
Marc Anthony’s Restaurant provides in-kind lunch for runners after the race. Dunkin Donuts provides coffee and donuts. Coca Cola of Cape Cod provides bottles of water. Lori Watkins will provide souvenir water bottles.
The YMCA race was started by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who wanted to share with the community that a new YMCA was coming to Wareham.
The YMCA of Wareham was the vision and idea of Dr. Charles (Sherm) Gleason, a prominent pediatrician in the southcoast area.
About 12 years ago, Gleason envisioned bringing the YMCA to Wareham after learning from area youth that there were no activities for them to get involved in.
Gleason donated the land and the seed funding to start a campaign to raise funds and the Gleason Family YMCA officially opened in August of 2004.
The YMCA is a state of the art facility with a rock climbing wall, a pool, and a skateboard park. Membership has now grown to more than 8,000. There have been several expansions since 2004, including a wellness room, a basketball court, and an indoor track. In 2010, an outdoor pool and a family center opened.
