Young accident victim begins rehabilitation

Apr 27, 2010

Catherine Tropeano, a nine-year-old Wareham resident injured in a March car accident, was transferred from Children's Hospital to Spaulding Hospital in Boston last Friday to begin rehabilitation.

According to a message that her father Patrick Tropeano requested be posted on Facebook, the move is "big progress."

"She has a lot of work ahead and she is on her way," said the message, which was posted by Susan Pizzolato.

Patrick Tropeano also reported that he stopped by the blood drive held for Catie on April 19 at Kaleidoscope of Dance, the studio where Catie danced for six years. Catie needed 33 pints of blood in the course of her multiple surgeries, and the blood drive helped replenish the region's supply.

Catie, four of her siblings, and her mother were injured in a two-car rollover on Route 25 West on March 13 when the family car was struck by another vehicle.  The crash is still under investigation, according to the State Police.

Catie and her eleven-year-old brother Ryan were transferred to Children's Hospital in Boston. All other occupants were treated at Tobey Hospital for minor injuries and released. Ryan was released from Children's a few days later.

A fundraiser for the Tropeanos will be held at Hong Kong Island on the Cranberry Highway in East Wareham on Sunday, May 16 at 4 p.m. Tickets will cost $20, and there will be raffles and other entertainment.
