Wareham to purchase two used school buses

May 8, 2013

The Selectmen on Tuesday authorized Town Administrator Derek Sullivan to complete a purchase of two used school buses, the money for which was approved at Town Meeting last October.

The total cost for both buses is $70,000.

The School Department has been trying to figure out how to come up with money to replace an aging fleet of school buses, including saving money by requiring that students in grades 5 through 12 walk if they live within a mile of their respective schools.

State law mandates that up until the 6th grade, school districts must offer transportation to students who live within two miles of their schools. Wareham currently buses any students who wish to ride the bus.
