Decas students host breakfast for veterans

Two kindergarten classes at Decas Elementary School observed Veteran’s Day by hosting “Muffins for the Military” on Friday, Nov. 8.

“It’s important to understand Veterans Day,” teacher Michele Lefrancious said. Lefrancious organized the event, which included teacher Wendy Nault’s class.

“A lot of kids don’t understand why they have Veterans Day off,” Lefrancious added. “There’s no food or presents. This is our way to connect them to the holiday.”

The event featured 39 students and two veterans.

“I think it’s fantastic kids appreciate Veterans Day like this,” veteran Dick York said. York served in Vietnam for two years while with the United States Marine Corps. “I’ve enjoyed coming to the school.”

The event was connected to class activities. The muffins were baked by the children. Lefrancious related the baking to math.

“The children had to understand the concepts of wholes and halves,” Lefrancious said. “So, we were able to tie this back to the curriculum.”

Students also sang in a Veterans Day song. A recording was made, and will be sent to the father of kindergartner Marissa Devitto. Devitto’s father is currently serving abroad, according to Lefrancious.

To conclude the event, the veterans were each given a thank you note signed by every child. York will be hanging his up.

“My service was worthwhile knowing these kids can enjoy their freedom the way as I did as a kid,” York explained.
