Bestselling author to visit July 16 Gatemen game
Award-winning author and journalist Larry Tye will visit Wareham on Friday, June 16, to talk about his latest book, "Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend." Recently released in paperback, Tye's biography of Satchel Paige, one of baseball history's most esteemed and intriguing characters, spent most of last summer on the New York Times Bestseller List.
During Paige's years in the Negro and Major Leagues, he posted career stats so eye-popping - 2,000 wins, 250 shutouts, three victories on the same day - they seem like misprints. Bigotry, however, kept big league teams from signing Paige until he was forty-two, at which point he helped propel the Cleveland Indians to the World Series. Tye's book rewrites our history of integration in baseball and argues that Satchel, even more so than Jackie Robinson, opened the door for African Americans to the national pastime and forever changed his sport and this nation.
Tye will speak to fans prior to the Wareham Gatemen home game at Spillane Field on July 16 at 7 p.m. His talk will begin at 6:45 p.m. and copies of his book will be available for purchase.
He will also give a talk and sign copies of his book at the Cotuit Library earlier that day, and at the Market Street Bookshop in Mashpee Commons on the afternoon of Saturday, July 17.
