Patrons pack church for holiday fair
The Harvest and Holly Fair at the First Congregational Church of Wareham reminded people that the holiday season is than a week away.
While Wareham is celebrating its 275th birthday this fall, so will the church. And for as long as any current member of the church can remember, the fair has taken place every year.
Member Pam Miller has helped organize the fair for the last five years. She also runs the youth group at the church.
“I try to improve the fair each year,” said Miller. “We have 21 outside vendors this year… 14 vendors from the church and the lunch tables.”
Miller had a lot of interest from vendors, having to turn away seven due to a lack of room.
Among the outside vendors was Shirley Dickson of Carver. She knitted caps, but her table was highlighted by crab claws which were painted white, given a Santa hat and eyes to make shore-style Christmas ornament.
“I was curious of what the turnout would be today, given Plymouth was holding its parade today,” Dickson said. “I was impressed and thought it was very nice.”
Dickson’s table had well over a dozen knitted caps.
“These are all hand made,” Dickson explained. “I can whip one up in a couple of day if I want.”
On the other end of the room, Maggie Davin of Sagamore Beach had boxes of handmade cards.
“Painting is my first love, but these cards are also fun,” Davin said.
As for church-affiliated tables, assistant treasurer Sandra Turner stood beside her daughter and granddaughter. Turner was selling knitted items.
“I make a lot of these with the help of my family,” Turner said. She has been with the church for 29 years.
“We have many more people coming this year,” said church member Cristine Raimonde.
Dianne Enzian, fundraiser coordinator had trouble guessing exactly how many people attended the fair. However, there was a steady flow of people throughout the day.
Miller said the church is striving to raise $4,500 from the fair this year. Besides having more tables than previous years, the church also extended the fair until 3 p.m.
With these factors, they hope to reach that goal.
Up next for the church is a Christmas pageant on Dec. 15.
