In December, more elbow room

Dec 18, 2013

If it seems like Wareham’s population doubles in the summer -- that’s because it does.

Selectmen in this town with a year-round population of 22,000 are each year asked to provide a count of the community’s seasonal population to the state Alcoholic Beverage Commission for use in allocating liquor licenses.

This year’s summer number, as certified by Selectmen Tuesday night: 43,644.

Selectman Alan Slavin said after the meeting that he couldn’t remember what the summer number was last year, but “it’s always about the same.”
