Apr 3, 2014

Nineteen girls from Wareham Middle School visited Bridgewater State University on Friday, March 28, to learn about astronomy with the Greenlight for Girls organization.

Greenlight for Girls is an international organization that encourages young women to get involved in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The students participated in several workshops at the event, learning about the different planets, the distances between the planets, and the characteristics of each planet. They also visited Bridgewater State’s state-of-the-art observatory, where they viewed the sky and learned about the constellations. In addition, the girls learned how to identify different elements using gas spectroscopy.

This event was free to students and was sponsored by the Junior Engineering Club. Transportation was provided by the Wareham Public Schools Office of Beyond School Time.
