Students learn about national history during trip to Boston

May 8, 2014

The Wareham High School Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps took a historical ride to Boston to learn about the actions colonists took to establish our republic.

The May 6 trip supported the JROTC mission, "to motivate young people to be better citizens," by giving the students an appreciation for what our country's founding fathers endured for our freedom.

Prior to the field trip, students were required to conduct research and read about the following places and events: the State House, Park Street Church, the Ben Franklin Statue, the Boston Massacre, and Faneuil Hall. Student teams were then assigned the task of giving presentations at each of these locations.

As a follow-up to the trip, senior students will also write a six-page paper for their JROTC senior portfolio, which will be a reflection and analysis of the trip.

Following the briefings the students were given 45 minutes to have lunch in Faneuil Hall and experience an afternoon in the heart of Boston.

Overall, the 24 students in the high school JROTC program gained perspective on the Wareham High School and JROTC mission of striving to become better citizens by reflecting on how some of our nation’s first citizens sacrificed and fought to achieve our independence.
