Three more former Gatemen chosen in MLB draft
Friday’s first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft saw five former-Wareham Gatemen chosen, and on Saturday, three more former Gatemen had their names called by big league clubs.
The Atlanta Braves took right-handed closer Bradley Roney (Wareham 2013; Southern Mississippi) in the 8th round of the draft; left-handed pitcher/outfielder Cole Sturgeon (Wareham 2012, 2013; Louisville) was chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the draft; and the New York Yankees scooped up second baseman Ty McFarland (Wareham 2012; James Madison) in the 10th round.
That makes eight total former Gatemen in all chosen by Major League teams as of Saturday afternoon.
"It's been like that every year," said Gatemen Head Coach Cooper Farris after the team's practice Saturday afternoon, noting that it's not uncommon for players from the Cape Cod League to be drafted because it draws some of the best young ballplayers from across the country. "I'm proud for all of 'em. I know that's their dream, and hopefully we've had a little part of that."
