Eric Balboni brings free classical music to Wareham
When Eric Balboni takes the stage next week, most of the audience will not be able to understand the words he's singing.
Balboni, who recently graduated Anna Maria College with degrees in music education and vocal performance, will perform piano and flute pieces by famous composers, and not only will be singing in English, but in French and German as well.
He says his specialty is the German Lieder, a type of 19th-century German song for solo voice and piano.
The concert, which will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd 7 p.m. on June 26, will focus on classical piano, flute, and vocal pieces performed by Balboni and his former Professor Elizabeth Noone.
"There's a lot of variety but it's all cohesive so I think it's going to be a wonderful program," said Balboni. "I'm doing it as a kind of 'thank you' to the church and the community of Wareham that really encouraged me to grow as a musician."
Balboni, a lifelong resident of Wareham (besides his four years in college) and a 2010 graduate of Wareham High School, said he is grateful for the opportunity to perform such a varied set and that he got his start in music early.
"My family has always been musical," he said. "It started with my grandfather, Dan, who was a pianist. He taught my uncles and aunts and my mother to love music as well, and so I guess my mother kind of passed that down to me."
Balboni began taking piano lessons when he was very young at the encouragement of his mother. He went on to play in the band and sing in the chorus in both middle and high school, but says he had "always been singing along in church."
"That was where I really first started," he said.
He eventually ended up in the New Bedford Youth Symphony, performing in many regional and state music festivals before heading off to Anna Maria in Paxton, Mass. to study music.
Balboni said in the future he hopes to continue to perform either vocally or on piano or flute, as he claims he is equally versed in all three. After obtaining his master's degree in vocal performance from New York University, where he is headed this fall, he says he would like to teach music either in New York or in Massachusetts.
"I would like to run a private lesson studio where I could teach all kinds of music," said Balboni.
No matter what, Balboni just wants to keep doing what he loves, and that includes singing in not only English, but German and French as well.
"I want to continue to just perform wherever and whenever I can," he said.
The Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 74 High Street in Wareham, across the street from Tobey Hospital. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.
