Police Chief to be appointed through exam
Wareham will soon have an answer as to who permanently succeeds former Police Chief Richard Stanley.
Town Administrator Derek Sullivan announced at Tuesday evening’s Selectmen’s meeting that “Assessment Center” exams would take place in Wareham, where eligible applicants would test for the position.
Interim Police Chief Kevin Walsh took over for Stanley last July when he went on medical leave. Stanley went on to announce his retirement in November of 2013, and Walsh remained in the position.
Sullivan said the test would only be open to current Wareham lieutenants, which include Walsh, and sergeants. It will be held on November 6, and applicants must apply by October 30 at 3 p.m.
The exams are made up of 45, equally-weighted exercises that are an overall assessment of candidates’ abilities, according to Sullivan.
“The test is part of the Civil Service process,” added Selectman Peter Teitelbaum, referring to the process by which many government employees are either hired or promoted.
Sullivan said there would be a meeting to explain the process to any candidates.
“It’s not an exam you can study for,” said Sullivan. “You don’t cram for this.”
