Local writer publishes spooky book
Wareham resident, and now author, Tim Weisberg first became interested in the paranormal during a stay on his aunt and uncle's farm in Halifax when he was just a young teenager.
"My cousin was messing around with a Ouija board," Weisberg explained, when all of a sudden, the two heard things rattling throughout the house and faucets turning on and off.
The experience piqued his curiosity. Weisberg started researching paranormal activity, and found that people actually conduct investigations on mysterious goings-on. His curiosity never quite left him, and in 2005, he started a Saturday night radio show on WBSM-AM called "Spooky Southcoast."
The show features calls from listeners who share stories about paranormal activity and sightings.
"Over the years, we've developed quite a family. A family of listeners, a family of investigators," Weisberg said.
Weisberg and his team began conducting investigations of many of the stories that they heard from listeners. They pieced together larger stories, and worked to find out more about paranormal activity and why hauntings occur.
All of this has led to Weisberg's first book, released this month on The History Press, called, "Ghosts of the SouthCoast."
The book features tales of mysterious activity from Wareham to Westport to Fall River, as well as 40 pictures, most of which Weisberg took. Readers can learn about the legends of Wareham's Fearing Tavern, and about the activity surrounding Lizzie Borden's Fall River home.
"I thought that I would write a lot about the ghosts," Weisberg said, but found himself providing a lot of information about the history of the places he was investigating. Some paranormal activity in this area can be attributed to King Philip's War, one of the bloodiest in North American history, Weisberg said.
"Most people, when they write ghost books, just want to tell a spooky story, and that's a disservice to why the haunt happens in the first place," Weisberg said.
"Ghosts of the SouthCoast" is currently available on Amazon.com for $19.99. It will soon be available at the Old Company Store and at Borders.
Weisberg, a sportswriter for the New Bedford Standard-Times, has been featured on the History Channel and Discovery Channel, as well as in FATE Magazine, SoCo Magazine, and the SouthCoast Insider. He's already working out the details of his second book, which he will write with Spooky Southcoast Content Director Chris Balzano.
