Escape the Cape triathlon to return, make donation to town

The Escape the Cape Triathlon will be returning to town once again this summer, but this time it's coming with a bit of extra cash.

Race Director Tim Richmond of Max Performance came before Selectmen Tuesday night and said the company would be providing a $1,000 donation to the Community Events Committee.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said that while the race brings hundreds of people into town for the weekend (and will likely pack the new Marriott hotel set to open in the spring), residents have raised concerns with the race using the Onset Pier on a Friday and Saturday in the summer, eating into potential parking revenues.

Sullivan said he and Richmond met and discussed ways to make the partnership work for the town.

Richmond said he is always looking at ways to work with different groups in town and give back to the community.

"It's our community approach to directing races," said Richmond.

Max Performance also pays for all of the police, fire and EMS details for the race.

The race is set for June 13 with a rain date of June 14th. The race course begins at Shell Point where athletes plunge into Onset Bay for a 1/3-mile, point-to-point swim to the Onset Pier followed by a 10-mile bike leg through Onset Village returning to the pier and finishes with a 3.1-mile run along the East River with the finish line in the park next to the Onset band shell.

"You've been a great partner," said Selectman Steve Holmes. "We look forward to working together long into the future."

"It's a nice way to promote our town," said Selectman Alan Slavin. "It's a nice way to use our assets."
