Groups plan town-wide trash cleanup days

May 13, 2015

Multiple groups of citizens are fed up with the trash problem in Wareham and have decided to clean up the town.

On May 30 and 31 there will be two overlapping town-wide trash cleanup events that all citizens are able to participate it. One has been organized through the YMCA and the other through a group of citizens called the Don't Trash Wareham Project.

"A group of us decided to get together and make a formal group to address the trash issue," said Nora Bicki, one of the organizers of Don't Trash Wareham.

Bicki, along with resident Mary Bruce, spoke at Tuesday night's Selectmen meeting about their two-day, two-pronged plan to clean up Wareham. Bicki said the group has partnered with groups and organizations such as the school department, Boys and Girls Club, Southcoast Health, the Wareham Historical Society, the Swifts Beach Improvement Association, and others to clean up the town on May 30 and 31.

She said during those two days anyone and everyone is invited to grab trash bags and gloves and take part in the cleanup project. She also said the second stage of the program will involve a prevention program that educates the public on reducing and eradicating litter in the town.

"This project was created to change the culture of littering prevalent in our town," according to a project press release. "Its goal is to clean the trash and debris on our streets, in our neighborhoods, around our businesses, in our parks and on our beaches."

On May 30, the first day of Don't Trash Wareham's cleanup, there will also be a cleanup organized by the Gleason Family YMCA from 9 a.m. to noon.

The YMCA has teamed up with the Wesley United Methodist Church to provide trash bags, gloves and a map of the proposed cleanup route at their two starting locations.

The groups invite citizens to meet at either the Town Hall parking lot or at the Wesley Church at 462 Main St. Dumpster sites will be along each route.
