John A. Westgate, Sr., 82
John A. Westgate, Sr., 82, of West Wareham, died Jan. 10 at home. He was the husband of the late Sherry L. (Correia) Westgate and the son of the late George Robery and Rhoda Westgate.
He was born in Wareham and lived there all of his life.
Mr. Westgate retired from the United States Army in 1993 as a Sergeant First Class. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Later he worked as a self-employed painter and wall paper hanger.
Mr. Westgate attended Southeastern Massachusetts University.
He was a life member of Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club where he was an officer and chair of the Board of Directors. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing Texas Hold’em Poker. He was a member of Social Harmony A. F. & A.M. He served on the Town of Wareham Planning Board, Conservation Commission and Board of Appeals. Mr. Westgate held a State Supervisors Contractors License and Real Estate Brokers License.
Survivors include 2 sons, Christopher Westgate of Jefferson, New Hampshire, and John A. Westgate, Jr. of West Wareham; a stepsister, Elaine Smith of Wareham; a stepbrother, George Robery of Wareham; and three grandchildren, Jonele, Caleb and Logan Westgate.
His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. Burial will follow in Centre Cemetery.
Visiting hours are from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
