Minot Forest Elementary students share successful initiatives with School Committee
Kids and parents from Minot Forest Elementary paid a special visit to the School Committee Wednesday evening to tell them all about the various programs the school offers.
Third and fourth grade students on the MVP Team, which stands for Minot Values and Pride, and the K Club told the committee how they had helped to organize a drive to collect small change in classroom jars, with the proceeds benefiting Turning Point, an organization that assists the homeless in town.
The children also participated recently in a Books for Buddies program, which collected more than 300 books for preschoolers, as well as a successful toy drive and coat drive.
School Committee Chairman Geoff Sweet drew some smiles when asking one of the students to speak of the biggest challenge his team had encountered. The boy told him that getting the preschoolers to listen to them was the most difficult part, because “they weren’t really that quiet.”
However, the problem had been resolved when the kids appointed a “shusher” from among their ranks.
Other initiatives include an upcoming family fun night and a Black Out Bullying day, when Minot Forest Elementary students will dress in black for school to highlight the problem of bullying. Students
“l just love how they are taking the values that they are learning at school and carrying that to the community,” Minot Forest Principal Joan Seamans said.
