Firefighters warn kids about dangers of thin ice
Armed with anecdotes, and led by firefighter Dana Lofgren, Wareham firefighters warned young children about the dangers of ice at Kaleidoscope Friday evening.
"I had a friend who walked across a lake to go to his house," recalled Lofgren. "He never made it home."
He also cited the recent Brockton incident, in which two young boys were pulled from the water, after they fell through thin ice on Jan. 10. Reports say one of the boys was in a coma, as of Jan. 11.
The children asked many questions ranging from the strength of rescue equipment to how to save a dog who falls into the water.
"Pets are replaceable but you are not," said Lofgren.
During the final portion of the workshop, Lofgren showed the children rescue gear, such as rescue discs and scuba gear. He also explained rescue tactics, that included examples like, "throw, row and go," in which the rescuer heaves a rescue disk to recover a person fallen through the ice.
Lofgren couldn't hide his enthusiasm, while showing the children his gear.
"After all, at the fire house, we are just big kids with big toys," he said.
