Valentine's Day workout breaks hearts, bodies
Though titled a “Heartbreaker Workout,” the bootcamp class led at the Gleason Family YMCA Sunday morning aimed at creating healthier hearts.
On what is supposedly the most romantic day of the year, Liz Pothel and her husband Ken Sellinger led a circuit-style bootcamp workout in the Y’s gymnasium for couples and singles alike. Pothel and Sellinger separately teach regular classes at the Y, but decided to team up for Valentine’s Day. But the decision was not one of romance.
“The ‘heartbreak’ was having both of us teaching everybody,” Pothel said. “We are both extremely intense instructors, and having both of us made the class harder.”
The workout was a mix of Pothel’s circuit-style training, and Sellinger’s military-style training, ending with a five-minute “terrible” abdominal workout led by Sellinger.
“His ab workouts are really tough,” Pothel said. “I hate them.”
Pothel said Sellinger’s style focuses more on strength and conditioning, where her classes focus on short intervals of intense strength, broken up with cardio.
“I don’t like giving breaks – the breaks are not really breaks,” Pothel said. “But I tell people to stop, if they need to.”
Sunday’s workout, said participant Mary Carbone, was brutal. She said she and the friend with whom she attended the class regularly do Pothel’s circuit workouts.
Even the Wareham Week’s own Zarrin Ahmed took part in the class. She said she left the court “shaking.”
Pothel said she and her husband plan to hold themed workouts every holiday. The next one will be in March for St. Patrick's Day. Pothel said she would consider wearing a costume that matches the holiday.
