Two arrested in assault that leaves man critically wounded
Two men have been arrested for the assault of an unnamed 44-year-old male on Sunday morning, according to the Wareham Police Department.
Police said officers responded to a call around 1:30 a.m. at the 380-block of Onset Avenue for a reported fight in the street. Officers reported there were several people in the area, and that there was a man on the ground with severe head wounds and extensive injuries to his arms and legs.
The injured man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police said investigation into the incident led to the arrest of Jose Madera, 37, of Wareham, who was still at the scene, and Peter “Bucky” Tavares, 63. Police said both Tavares and Madera were uncooperative, and that Madera assaulted officers, during his arrest.
Police also said they recovered a baseball bat at the scene, and that they learned Tavares had threatened someone else at the scene with a knife.
Both were arraigned at the Wareham District Court Monday morning. Madera has been charged with assault with intent to murder while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, threats to commit a crime, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace. Tavares has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.
Both are being held at the Plymouth House of Correction, Madera on $50,000 bail, and Tavares on $10,000 bail.
